Summary

The inclusion of migrant students into European educational systems is a priority for policymakers in the European Union, as there are still many challenges in this regard.
The FEINAMC project focuses on the dissemination and upscaling of good practices (the mentoring programme and the prior learning assessment tool) to foster inclusion of newly arrived migrant children in the formal educational systems in Austria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Spain and in the European Union.

Main Objectives

The project aims to disseminate and scale up good practices to foster the inclusion of newly arrived migrant children in the formal educational system.
The specific objectives of the project are:

  • Disseminate and scale up good practices (the mentoring programme and the prior learning assessment tool) to foster inclusion of newly arrived migrant children into the formal educational system
  • Support the inclusion of newly arrived migrants in good quality education, including by assessing knowledge and validating prior learning

Pedagogical methodologies used

The project will adapt the good practices (a mentoring programme and a prior learning assessment tool) to guarantee their dissemination and upscaling by developing several activities.
The project is based on the following methodologies, which are the basis that support the two good practices presented by the project, the mentoring programme and the prior learning assessment tool:

  • Cooperative learning methodology
  • Peer tuition methodology
  • Mentoring methodology
  • Image-based prior learning assessment methodology
    Leading schools to social inclusion

Identified innovation elements

  • The implementation of the prior learning assessment tool to allow schools to assess knowledge and validating prior learning of newly arrived migrants
  • The development of a mentoring programme using a peer to peer methodology in which young students of migrant origin support newly arrived migrant students in their process of inclusion in the educational systems

Lesson learnt

  • It is necessary a previous mentors and mentees training about what peer mentoring is, how to properly engage in it and how to strengthen their intercultural competences
  • It is recommended inform public opinion and European policymakers on the issue of social inclusion of students with a migrant background

Scability potential

Implementation of the structure of couples (mentors and mentees) in more participating schools, develop more than two good practices in schools in Europe.
